The 1st of May, all around the world, people is celebrating the day of work. There are often workers' demonstrations. In France too !
But there is an other tradition for the 1st of May !
We offer "muguet" (lily of the valley), a flower that grows at this period, to our family or friends to whish them happiness, luck...
You can find lily of the valley sellers, since very early in the morning, in every streets of France.
It is said that the "muguet" that gives more luck is the one with 13 little bells ;) !

Cocorico !

The cock is the emblem, not an official one but a strongly established one, of France. It's a reference to the Gallic cock (le coq gaulois) (the Gaul are the people who lived in France a long long time ago ;-) like in the comics Asterix).
Even if the cock has never been the emblem of Gaul's, the creation of this symbol came from the Roman Empire. It's a latin pun on gallus (the cock) and Gallus (the Gaul (La Gaule), the old name of France).
This symbol is often used by sports federations, and can also be found on some "monuments aux morts" (monuments for war deads). A great french brand of sports clothes and stuff uses this cock as logo.
And to close this subject, an extremely important detail: the cry of the cock in France is "cocorico".

It's the cock from the village of Asterix the Gaul.

Tout nouveau tout beau !
